Insurance
(auto mostly... but also RV/plane/boat)If you are involved in an automobile accident in México, and cannot provide proof of some sort of financial responsibility, you can (and most likely will) be detained, typically behind bars (read: jail). Your U.S. company may assure you that their coverage extends to México (and it probably does), but the Mexican authorities do not recognize U.S. policies. Thus, it is advisable that you purchase supplementary insurance for your journeys south of the border. Annual policies are quite affordable. Anyone taking their vehicle south of the border more than 7-10 days in a year should consider one. The established companies below write policies issued by Mexican insurance companies on an annual and/or daily basis.
